The ruling Awami League’s student affiliate has expelled two of its leaders, four days after a photo showing them carrying guns during an eviction drive in the capital’s Gulistan.

bp-n2-2015-11-2A statement issued by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Monday said Dhaka metro South unit General Secretary Md Sabbir Hossain and Wari unit General Secretary Ashiqur Rahman has been ousted from the organisation.

The statement signed by BCL President Md Saifur Rahman Shohag and General Secretary SM Zakir Hossain, however, did not cite any reason behind the decision.

On Oct 27, a clash erupted between Dhaka South City Corporation staff and hawkers at Gulistan during a drive to evict street vendors.

During the clash, Sabbir Rahman and Ashikur Rahman were seen firing in the air with pistols.

The picture of the two brandishing guns appeared in the media the next day.

According to media reports, the two were fighting for the street vendors, whom the city authorities want to evict from Gulistan.
